the old library

community arts café & performance space, bodmin, 2019

The brief for The Old Library was a challenging one, primarily driven by budget and the amount of elements required. We made robust layouts that would attract users to the space and make the most of the buildings features.

We worked very closely with the clients and broader members of the community to help fund and build our proposals. We managed to create a big impact by selecting a clear material palette that appeals to the broad range of users to the space.

“Stephen managed to build a true understanding of what we wanted and embed that in his conceptual designs. When we first saw those designs for a fresh and contemporary take on the heritage library, we knew that we would be creating something special.”

– Fin Irwin, Managing Director, intoBodmin

what we did

The key was to the success of the space was to get the layout right, making sure that the cafe could me minimally manned and making sure accessibility wouldn’t be an issue. Once this was agreed we managed to create a big impact by selecting a clear material palette that appeals to the broad range of users of the space. We worked very closely with the clients and broader members of the community to help fund and build our proposals.

brief

The brief for Grade II Listed Old Library was a challenging one, primarily driven by budget and the amount of elements required. We made robust layouts that would attract users to the space and make the most of the buildings features. We introduced a back kitchen, accessible WC, a stage and a servery with plenty of space for seating and tables that could be removed and stacked for standing events.

process

Working closely with the client to understand the brief, the objectives of the space and the financial limitations we worked to create an affordable, yet impactful, community space. We worked with community members and local businesses who helped us create and affordably source certain elements as well as us getting involved with the decorating ourselves, it was an ‘all hands on deck’ situation!

results

We made robust layouts that would attract users to the space and make the most of the buildings features. We introduced a back kitchen, accessible WC, a stage and a servery with plenty of space for seating and tables that could be removed and stacked for standing events.

By creating a stripe motif we were able to brand the space giving it a unique simple identity, we used this on the walls and across the front of the servery, this was then used in the logo for The Old Library.

We have developed a multi-use space tactically using layout, budget and resources to make a big impact.

"Boaz Studio came in to advise on the complete refurbishment of the communal space here at Sunley Orford House, a purpose-built block of quality retirement housing in the centre of Truro. Having listened thoroughly to the design brief he provided well thought out advice on materials, colours and decoration with options that not only bring a more contemporary feel but will revitalise the space for the future. His thought and attention to detail was appreciated by all involved."
