We recently found ourselves working on two projects that aim to accommodate the diverse needs of children with autism. This opened up an entirely new area of inquiry for us, and we wanted to share what we learned. We’ve been reading research by ga architects, who specialise in designing spaces for children and adults with autism and learning disabilities. Design considerations for people with autism are a source of debate with conflicting advice, but this is probably due to the diversity of needs.
Boaz Studio understands the importance of designing places that encourage everyone’s comfort, safety, and sensory well-being. In this journal post, we’ll touch on significant research findings and design concepts to help others develop autism-friendly environments.
Lighting
Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a conducive environment for individuals with autism. Research suggests that certain types of lighting can have a significant impact on sensory experiences. Here are some lighting considerations to keep in mind:
Use LED lights: Opt for LED lights over fluorescent ones, as individuals with autism may be more sensitive to flicker from fluorescent lighting. LED lights offer flexibility in adjusting brightness levels and colours to create a comfortable environment.
Desk lamps: Instead of overhead lighting, consider using desk lamps to provide low-level. This allows for better control of lighting levels and reduces glare, which can be distracting and irritating for individuals with autism.
Colour filters: Use colour filters over digital screens to reduce visual stimulation and create a more calming environment. These filters can help mitigate the impact of harsh lighting and create a softer visual experience.
Controllable visual stimulation: Provide easy-to-use controls for adjusting lighting settings, including colour, tone, and intensity. This allows individuals with autism to personalize their environment according to their preferences and sensory needs.
In addition to lighting, acoustics play a significant role in creating a sensory-friendly environment. Here are some tips for managing sound in interior spaces:
Avoid white noise: White noise can be irritating to individuals with autism. Avoid sources of white noise, such as whirring fans or hissing radiators, and opt for sound-absorbing materials like soft furnishings and acoustic panels to minimize unwanted noise.
Absorb sound: Use acoustic panels and soft furnishings to absorb sound and reduce reverberation in interior spaces. This helps create a quieter environment that is conducive to concentration and relaxation.
The layout of an interior space can have a significant impact on its usability and accessibility for individuals with autism. Here are some layout considerations to keep in mind:
Minimize clutter: Keep the space organized and clutter-free to reduce visual and sensory overload. Use descriptive labels on items to facilitate navigation and understanding.
Flexible furniture: Incorporate moveable furniture that can be easily reconfigured to accommodate different activities and preferences. This allows for greater flexibility and adaptability in the use of space.
Room dividers: Use room dividers to create defined areas within the space, providing opportunities for privacy and solitude when needed. Nooks and secluded areas can offer individuals with autism a retreat from sensory stimulation.
Materials & Furniture
When selecting materials and furniture for autism-friendly spaces, it’s essential to prioritize safety, comfort, and sensory sensitivity. Here are some considerations to guide your choices:
Rounded corners: Choose furniture with rounded corners to minimize the risk of injury and create a calming environment.
Easy-to-clean finishes: Prioritize materials that are easy to clean and maintain, as cleanliness is often important for individuals with autism.
Seating options: Consider seating options that provide movement and support for the body, such as ball chairs, rocking chairs, or pod chairs. These options can help individuals with autism regulate their sensory experiences and improve comfort.
Avoid strong smells: Choose materials that are free from strong smells, as individuals with autism may be hypersensitive to odours. Opt for natural, non-toxic materials like organic fabrics and wooden furniture to create a healthier indoor environment.

Colours
Colour can have a profound impact on mood and sensory experiences for everyone. When selecting colours for autism-friendly spaces, it’s essential to consider their effects on individuals with autism. Individuals with autism often see colours with a greater intensity than non-ASD. Here are some recommendations:
Soft colours. Choose soft, muted colours such as neutrals, greens, blues, pinks, and violets to create a calming and soothing environment.
Avoid intense colours. Steer clear of bright whites, reds, yellows, and intense primary colours, as these can be overwhelming and overstimulating for individuals with autism.
Reduce strong contrasts. Consider tonally similar colours between walls, trims, and ceilings. You also want to reduce visual lines on walls.

"We used Boaz Studio as we needed some help reimagining our lounge after moving in just before having our first child. Our house wasn't working for us and our toddler. Stephen is so approachable and friendly and really listens. He's keen to understand what your needs and wants are as a client and then has an amazing way of turning that into something beautiful, practical, and personal. I am so impressed and would highly recommend Boaz Studio. On top of that, they're really professional, and communication is easy."

Their thoughtful designs really made the most of the spaces, not only in terms of furnishings and decor but also really useful advice about positioning for doors and windows. "Boaz Studio came in to advise on the complete refurbishment of the communal space here at Sunley Orford House, a purpose-built block of quality retirement housing in the centre of Truro. Having listened thoroughly to the design brief he provided well thought out advice on materials, colours and decoration with options that not only bring a more contemporary feel but will revitalise the space for the future. His thought and attention to detail was appreciated by all involved."
