A short two-week mini project to propose an office space for Bigg, a globally recognised digital marketing agency. Inspired by contemporary comic art, the space included a reception, 2 different sized meeting rooms, staff breakout space with kitchen, mother’s room/quiet room, comms, ‘big bolt’ office space, and print area, all on one floor level within an office block.
Five fully rendered 3D visuals demonstrate surface treatments and furniture layouts in the different zones. These are part of a package which included technical drawings and bespoke furniture designs.
As a young fast-growing business, Bigg expected to expand from 20 to 30 personnel within the following year. They needed a space to not only demonstrate how this could be achieved spatially, but also to help them attract and retain young talented graduates. The proposal was to reflect a collaborative, energetic and professional image where technology is a key factor in daily tasks.
The company’s brand identity included a superhero inspired tagline “every superhero needs a sidekick.” Inspired by the graphic style of David Mazzucchelli’s 2009 graphic novel Asterios Polyp – a contemporary take on retro comic illustration, we decided to take this and apply it as the primary concept to the proposal. The design showcased several examples of bespoke furniture directly inspired by this concept, including a large coworking desk in the shape of a lightning bolt, mini bolt tables fabricated in 100% recycled aluminium with different work heights, and fold up shelf desks for flexible use. Sustainability was a big factor in decision making, often demonstrated in metal materials which reflected the lightning bolt scheme. The print area – rather unusually – became a feature in the space, by including furniture entirely made from paper pulp.
A fresh approach on comic book superheroes, applied to an office interior. The body of work was compiled into a digital presentation. This project showcases a fun and innovative approach to office design, with a big focus on social and environmental sustainability.
