becoming a b corp: our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility

We’re proud to join the growing community of B Corp businesses in the UK, waving the flag for Cornwall! From the outset, the Boaz Studio premise was to focus on people and planet, and formed the basis of everything we set out to achieve. That is why we have made the decision to become a certified B Corp™, solidifying our commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and ethical business practices.

cornwall is leading the way…

Cornish brands that we admire for their principles, such as: Origin Coffee, Finisterre, Skinflint Lighting, Roddas, St Eval Candles, and Pentire Drinks, are all B Corp recognised. Cornwall is home to the second largest cohort of B Corp businesses after London. There are currently over 1,300 B Corps in the UK and 6,279 worldwide. Other interiors industry B Corps include House of Hackney, COAT Paints, Plank Hardware and Naturalmat.

We are deeply grateful for the expertise, guidance, and encouragement provided by Matt Hocking at Leap, who first made us aware of the B Corporation movement back in 2021. Stephen attended B Creative, a B Corp bootcamp hosted by Matt, designed for creatives within the Cultivator Cornwall community. We’d also like to thank Scott James at WWA for his advice, and all the other B Corps who shared their knowledge and experiences.

Transforming spaces with purpose and integrity, our interior design studio is proud to announce our B Corp certification, solidifying our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility!

what is a b corp?

A B Corporation, or B Corp for short, is a type of business that meets rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. B Corps are certified by the nonprofit organization B Lab, which assesses a company’s impact on its workers, customers, community, and the environment.

why becoming a b corp matters to us

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Boaz Studio. By becoming a B Corp, we are taking a significant step towards formalizing our commitment to environmental and ethical responsibility. Here’s why becoming a B Corp matters to us:

  • Measuring What Matters: As a B Corp, we undergo a comprehensive assessment that evaluates our impact on various stakeholders, including our employees, clients, suppliers, community, and the environment. This assessment allows us to gain insights into areas where we can improve our practices and make a positive impact.
  • Accountability and Transparency: B Corps are held to high standards of accountability and transparency. By adhering to these standards, we are able to build trust with our stakeholders and demonstrate our commitment to operating with integrity.
  • Driving Positive Change: B Corps are part of a global movement of businesses striving to use their influence and resources for the greater good. By becoming a B Corp, we join a community of like-minded businesses that are dedicated to making a positive impact on the world.
  • Inspiring Others: By leading the way as a B Corp, we hope to inspire other businesses in our industry and beyond to prioritize sustainability and social responsibility. We believe that together, we can create a more sustainable and equitable future.

our commitment to sustainability and social responsibility

As a B Corp, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of sustainability and social responsibility. Here are some of the key areas where we focus our efforts:

  • Environmental Stewardship: We prioritize eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient design solutions, and sustainable practices throughout our projects. We strive to minimize our carbon footprint and promote a cyclical economy. Designing healthy spaces for our clients not only supports environmental wellbeing, but human health too.
  • Ethical Sourcing: We carefully select suppliers and partners who share our values and uphold ethical business practices. We prioritize working with local artisans and suppliers who prioritize fair trade, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability. Our B Corp journey goals include ensuring that at least 50% of Boaz Studio’s company expenses are spent within a 50 mile radius of our studio in Cornwall.
  • Employee Well-being: We prioritize the well-being and professional development of our team members. We foster a positive and inclusive work environment that encourages creativity, collaboration, and personal growth.
  • Community Engagement: We actively engage with our local community and support initiatives that align with our values. We believe in giving back and contributing to the well-being of the communities we serve. We offer 80 hours pro bono annually towards community projects. These have included regenerating The Old Library, Bodmin, and contributing time to The Trinity Centre in St Austell, including a brick making workshop with Brickfield.
  • Continuous Improvement: We are committed to ongoing improvement and innovation in our sustainability practices. We regularly review our operations, seek feedback, and strive to implement new strategies and technologies that reduce our environmental impact. Our B Corp accreditation will be reviewed every 3 years, so this is only the beginning for us!

follow our journey

Becoming a B Corp is an important milestone for Boaz Studio. It reinforces our dedication to sustainability and social responsibility, and it serves as a constant reminder of the positive impact we can make as a business.

We invite you to join us on this journey. Whether you are a client, supplier, partner, or member of our community, your support and collaboration are invaluable. Together, we can create a more sustainable and equitable future for all.

What are our next hurdles?

A B Corp certification is all about progressive development. In 3 years time we will have to go through the same process again to become re-certified. In this time we hope to have not only upheld everything we have achieved so far, but improved significantly in all areas of assessment.

  • We’d like to understand and pay more attention to our carbon footprint – how can we track this for each individual project?
  • Ongoing monitoring of supplier and subcontractor standards regarding ethical sourcing, fair labour practices, and environmental impact.
  • As Boaz Studio grows and takes on larger projects, maintaining the same level of sustainability and social impact becomes more challenging. This will require careful planning, resource management, and the ability to influence and collaborate with suppliers and partners to align with Boaz Studio’s values.

a creative team that achieve results...

Boaz Studio Interior Design | B Corp Services

"We used Boaz Studio as we needed some help reimagining our lounge after moving in just before having our first child. Our house wasn't working for us and our toddler. Stephen is so approachable and friendly and really listens. He's keen to understand what your needs and wants are as a client and then has an amazing way of turning that into something beautiful, practical, and personal. I am so impressed and would highly recommend Boaz Studio. On top of that, they're really professional, and communication is easy."

"Stephen and Alice worked with us to produce a design for the interior of our coffee house - their ability to bring together all of our different needs and ideas into one unified concept was fantastic - they have knack for drawing out the most efficient use of whatever space they're working with. First class."

"Boaz provided layouts and concept interior designs for our new home, and the results were fantastic: they managed to somehow provide us with something completely unexpected that was completely our style and what we wanted. We feel so much more confident managing the building work and decorating now, and can't wait to see it finished. Highly recommended."

"We worked with Boaz Studio to plan our two-storey extension and associated alterations to our house. We couldn't have done it without them, they were brilliant! Their thoughtful designs really made the most of the spaces, not only in terms of furnishings and decor but also really useful advice about positioning for doors and windows. Stephen and Alice are both fabulous at what they do and really lovely to work with. Highly recommended!"

"Boaz Studio came in to advise on the complete refurbishment of the communal space here at Sunley Orford House, a purpose-built block of quality retirement housing in the centre of Truro. Having listened thoroughly to the design brief he provided well thought out advice on materials, colours and decoration with options that not only bring a more contemporary feel but will revitalise the space for the future. His thought and attention to detail was appreciated by all involved."
