Boaz Studio was founded in 2018 by Stephen Tozer after completing his degree in interior design at Falmouth University. Stephen went on to win the prestigious Society of British and International Interior Design Society’s ‘Designed for Business’ award for his final project. Stephen has a background of working for big brands in marketing roles such as Cadbury, Warner Brothers and Ginsters before turning his hand to interior design.

Alice Nightingale, a fellow Falmouth University alum, joined the team in 2019 bringing with her a wealth of knowledge around sustainability and alternative materials.

Boaz Studio was named after Stephen’s grandad, Boaz Stephens, Stephen had always loved the name Boaz and also loves a ‘z’! Our Boaz, as with it’s namesake, rhymes with toes!

Together we have worked on projects as varied as converting a shed into a study room and a wayfaring scheme around a hospital. We enjoy the variety of projects that interior design offers us and are proud to get our teeth into anything that comes our way.

Stephen Tozer

Founder & Interior Designer

Stephen founded Boaz Studio after graduating from Falmouth University and winning the prestigious SBID prize for Interior Design. Stephen’s extensive career in customer marketing was excellent grounding for user focused interior design which he applies through ensuring the clients and their end users have effective, enjoyable and memorable experiences within the spaces we design. When he’s not exploring Cornwall’s picturesque beaches with his family and Bailey (the dog), or perusing National Trust properties, he’s trying a bit of DIY or hunting down the best Cornish coffee spots.

Alice Nightingale

Interior & Graphic Designer

A love of the natural world inspired Alice’s enthusiasm for sustainable design. She’s a dab-hand at Adobe Photoshop and delivering enticing visuals to captivate the imagination of our clients. When she’s not indulging her design head, Alice enjoys kayaking, gardening, and learning to play piano and cello.

A valued member of the Boaz team, Bailey enjoys hanging out in the studio and welcome yomps along the Cornish coastline.

As an interior design studio we take our role very seriously on the short and long term impact that the design industry can have on the planet. We have broken our Environmental & Sustainable Policy into the following key areas:

focus on the adaptive reuse of buildings

We will prioritise projects where we can help to rehabilitate unused buildings, using the materials within the space and honouring the building and its history. This practice applies to all projects; residential and commercial; as we assess a property’s existing assets, flaws, and resources to create a truly unique proposal.

local suppliers and materials

We work closely with local craftspeople and material suppliers to help ground the spaces we work on whilst minimising the requirement for transportation. This will establish projects in the communities where they are based by driving money back into the local economy.

material life cycle

We begin choosing materials and furniture by identifying the product’s complete life cycle – where did it come from and where will it end up? We adopt the product’s ‘story’ and offer it new life to form a cyclic approach and reduce the amount of furniture going to landfill. Our method is to reuse and reclaim where possible, or alternatively investigate new and innovative sustainable products.

We endeavour to showcase the most sustainable approaches and materials with our clients and through our online platforms. We aim to offer conversational concepts that will drive the sustainable agenda further. We are committed to keeping up to date with sustainable research by reading published articles, books and attending courses so we can offer our design services with confidence.

We aim to improve the working life of buildings and the spaces within through thoughtful design. We take steps to enhance indoor environmental quality, reducing the risk of sick building syndrome (illness from the building one resides or works) and making spaces more pleasant through the use of biophilic design. This addresses elements such as improved air quality, lighting and ventilation, whilst increasing human connectivity with the natural environment.

"Boaz Studio came in to advise on the complete refurbishment of the communal space here at Sunley Orford House, a purpose-built block of quality retirement housing in the centre of Truro. Having listened thoroughly to the design brief he provided well thought out advice on materials, colours and decoration with options that not only bring a more contemporary feel but will revitalise the space for the future. His thought and attention to detail was appreciated by all involved."

"I found boaz studio to be the perfect combination of design ideas and down to earth sense. They opened my eyes to aspects I hadn’t considered and delt with problems in creative ways."

"Stephen managed to build a true understanding of what we wanted and embed that in his conceptual designs. When we first saw those designs for a fresh and contemporary take on the heritage library, we knew that we would be creating something special."
