creating autism-friendly spaces: a design guide

We recently found ourselves working on two projects that aim to accommodate the diverse needs of children with autism. See one of them, a SEN school, here. This opened up an entirely new area of inquiry for us, and we wanted to share what we learned. We’ve been reading research by ga architects, who specialise in designing spaces for children and adults with autism and learning disabilities. Design considerations for people with autism are a source of debate with conflicting advice, but this is probably due to the diversity of needs.

• Absorb sound: Use acoustic panels and soft furnishings to absorb sound and reduce reverberation in interior spaces. This helps create a quieter environment that is conducive to concentration and relaxation.

• Seating options: Consider seating options that provide movement and support for the body, such as ball chairs, rocking chairs, or pod chairs. These options can help individuals with autism regulate their sensory experiences and improve comfort.
• Avoid strong smells: Choose materials that are free from strong smells, as individuals with autism may be hypersensitive to odours. Opt for natural, non-toxic materials like organic fabrics and wooden furniture to create a healthier indoor environment.

Colours

Colour can have a profound impact on mood and sensory experiences for everyone. When selecting colours for autism-friendly spaces, it’s essential to consider their effects on individuals with autism. Individuals with autism often see colours with a greater intensity than non-ASD. Here are some recommendations:

• Soft colours. Choose soft, muted colours such as neutrals, greens, blues, pinks, and violets to create a calming and soothing environment.
• Avoid intense colours. Steer clear of bright whites, reds, yellows, and intense primary colours, as these can be overwhelming and overstimulating for individuals with autism.
• Reduce strong contrasts. Consider tonally similar colours between walls, trims, and ceilings. You also want to reduce visual lines on walls.
