boaz studio achieves carbon literacy certification

Posted: 7th June 2024

At Boaz Studio, we are thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability. Both Stephen and Alice have proudly received their Carbon Literacy Certificates after attending comprehensive workshops hosted by Green-Works. This achievement underscores our commitment to environmental responsibility and aligns with our vision of creating beautiful, sustainable interiors.

The Journey to Carbon Literacy

Our interior designers, Stephen and Alice, recently completed a 3 day workshop with Green-Works, an environmental and social impact consultancy. Green-Works specialises in helping businesses craft thorough ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategies and develop clear roadmaps towards achieving Net Zero emissions.

The workshops provided by Green-Works offered in-depth knowledge on the impact of carbon emissions and practical steps to reduce our carbon footprint. Through these sessions, Stephen and Alice gained a deeper understanding of the climate crisis, and actionable strategies to incorporate eco-friendly practices into our operations at Boaz Studio.

What is Carbon Literacy?

Carbon Literacy refers to an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions on an individual, community, and organisational basis. Achieving carbon literacy means having the knowledge and capacity to make informed decisions to lower carbon footprints and contribute positively to environmental sustainability.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Boaz Studio, we believe that every design decision we make can contribute to a more sustainable future. With Stephen and Alice now certified in carbon literacy, we are even better equipped to integrate sustainable practices into our design processes. As part of the certification requirements, attendees were asked to outline specific actions they plan to commit to following their carbon literacy training. We want to:

  • Research the Passivhaus building standard: We plan to investigate how this energy-efficient building standard can be applied to interior design and interior architecture. The knowledge gained will guide us in specifying products and materials accordingly.
  • Increase cycling for short journeys: Alice aims to cycle more for short trips (once she gets her bike fixed!). When commuting by bike isn’t feasible, she plans to cycle to nearby shops and friends to reduce car use.
  • Minimise work-related travel: By scheduling more online meetings and planning site visits efficiently, we aim to reduce unnecessary travel and make each trip we do make as productive as possible.
  • Track our company’s carbon footprint: We are developing a plan to monitor our carbon footprint, focusing on the products we specify and our project management system, especially since our office is in a shared building with shared utilities.
  • Improve recycling of samples: We receive many samples and aim to introduce a better way of recycling them or passing them on to others.
  • Eat less beef: A personal commitment to reduce beef consumption for its significant environmental impact.

Alice says, “As an interior designer, we have some influence over several different groups. Individuals are coming to us for their residential projects, businesses for their commercial retail, hospitality, and office spaces. We also work with architects, craftspeople, suppliers, and construction teams, to name a few. If we can show others that positive change is doable and financially feasible, it sends a message of encouragement for them to make changes too. This is one of the reasons we wanted to become a B Corp, and have a little influence over our sector.”

“Better care taken when specifying products could lead to energy efficiency, recycled and locally sourced materials, minimizes waste sent to landfill. Whilst we already do this to some extent, we do not track carbon footprints or statistics, which could mean a fundamental change to our specification process. It could also strengthen the elimination or calling out of greenwashing.”

How This Impacts Our Clients

For our clients, this carbon literacy certification means that Boaz Studio is now more capable than ever of delivering interior design solutions that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible. We are dedicated to sourcing sustainable materials, minimising waste, and implementing energy-efficient solutions in all our projects. Our goal is to help our clients create spaces that are not only beautiful but also efficient and happy places to be!

Looking Ahead

The journey towards eco-effectiveness is ongoing, and at Boaz Studio, we are committed to continuous improvement. We will keep learning, adapting, and implementing best practices to ensure that our company and designs contribute positively to the environment.

"We used Boaz Studio as we needed some help reimagining our lounge after moving in just before having our first child. Our house wasn't working for us and our toddler. Stephen is so approachable and friendly and really listens. He's keen to understand what your needs and wants are as a client and then has an amazing way of turning that into something beautiful, practical, and personal. I am so impressed and would highly recommend Boaz Studio. On top of that, they're really professional, and communication is easy."
