Boaz Studio was appointed to lead the interior design of the newly refurbished gym at St Mellion Estate in Saltash, Cornwall, delivered in time for the new year. The project sits within the wider hospitality offering at the estate and required a considered approach that balanced performance, wellbeing and a strong connection to place.
The brief was to create a contemporary gym interior that supports both physical and mental wellbeing, while feeling intrinsically connected to its Cornish setting. Rather than following typical gym design trends, the space needed to feel welcoming, inclusive and calm, encouraging a wider range of users to feel comfortable using the facilities.
Our design approach centred on establishing a clear sense of place. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding golf course and wider Cornish landscape, we developed a palette of zesty greens and warm sandy neutrals that reflect the natural tones found across the estate.
This connection to the landscape helps ground the interior within its setting, creating continuity between the building and its surroundings and reinforcing St Mellion Estate’s identity.
Biophilic design principles played a key role in shaping the interior. The colour palette, material choices and visual references to the landscape help bring calm and balance into the space.
While many contemporary gyms favour dark, high contrast interiors that can feel intense or intimidating for some, this project intentionally took a different direction. The aim was to create a gym environment that feels approachable, restorative and inclusive, supporting both physical activity and overall wellbeing.
A key feature of the space is the bespoke graphic wallcovering, designed specifically for the project. Inspired by the geometric panels found throughout the hotel and the contoured lines of mapping, we created a topographical map of St Mellion and the surrounding area of Cornwall.
Printed as a large scale wallcovering, the graphic introduces depth, movement and visual interest, while offering a subtle but meaningful connection to the local landscape.
The project was delivered through close collaboration with a skilled team of specialists. Bringing the gym together just before Christmas was a real collective achievement and highlights the value of collaborative working on hospitality and leisure projects.
I used Boaz Studio for the interior design and refit of my Gelato shop, Scatho's in Portscatho, and the experience was outstanding. Working closely with Stephen, I shared my ideas and vision and he intuitively understood exactly what I was trying to achieve. He translated that vision into reality with incredible skill resulting in a design that was absolutely perfect.

Alice and Stephen from Boaz were fantastic to work with. Boaz Studio came in to advise on the complete refurbishment of the communal space here at Sunley Orford House, a purpose-built block of quality retirement housing in the centre of Truro. Having listened thoroughly to the design brief he provided well thought out advice on materials, colours and decoration with options that not only bring a more contemporary feel but will revitalise the space for the future. His thought and attention to detail was appreciated by all involved.
