Innovation Nursery is a new innovation space near St Austell, Cornwall. It is about bringing together people, ideas and emerging technologies within a purposefully designed environment.
Boaz Studio is designing the interiors for Innovation Nursery, including the Kegin offices, Kovva conference and multi use space, and onsite taproom and brewery.
The project provides an opportunity to explore what a genuinely sustainable commercial interior can look like when environmental considerations are embedded into the design process from the beginning. Alongside local and natural materials, we're exploring innovative materials made from waste streams and renewable resources, including mycelium, spent grain, coffee waste and recycled sea plastic.
The project is currently in development, with the final materials, furniture and finishes continuing to evolve alongside the wider scheme.
Material selection is central to the Innovation Nursery project, with a focus on natural, lower impact and innovative materials.
For Kovva, the conference and multi use space, we've incorporated a number of hemp based products, bringing natural texture, warmth and durability to a flexible working environment. Hemp is a fast growing natural fibre that requires relatively little water and few agricultural inputs.
The walls in the project are finished with Graphenstone, a mineral based paint with very low VOCs. Its breathable formulation supports healthier interiors, while its lime based composition even absorbs CO₂ during the curing process.
Innovation Nursery has also given us the opportunity to explore emerging materials made from waste streams and renewable resources.
We're investigating materials made using spent grain and coffee waste, alongside mycelium and recycled sea plastic.
We're choosing materials by considering their origins, manufacturing processes, performance, durability and potential for future reuse.
Innovation Nursery is home to the largest WASP crane in the UK, a large scale 3D printing system capable of printing structures on the scale of a house.
As part of the interior design, we're using the technology to create a bespoke 3D printed taproom counter frontage.
The counter brings the technology behind Innovation Nursery directly into the interior, connecting the building's focus on innovation with the way its spaces are designed and made.
Based in Pentewan near St Austell, the project takes a Cornwall centric approach to sourcing, exploring opportunities to work with local and South West suppliers, makers and manufacturers.
The aim is to create a scheme that feels connected to Cornwall through its materials and approach.
Across the offices, conference space, taproom and brewery, we're considering how the interior can remain useful as the project evolves.
Flexible spaces, durable materials and adaptable furniture can help reduce the need for unnecessary replacement and allow the interiors to respond to changing requirements.
Sustainable interior design considers both material selection and the long term adaptability and performance of a space.
This phase of the project is due to complete by the end of 2026.
I used Boaz Studio for the interior design and refit of my Gelato shop, Scatho's in Portscatho, and the experience was outstanding. Working closely with Stephen, I shared my ideas and vision and he intuitively understood exactly what I was trying to achieve. Alice and Stephen from Boaz were fantastic to work with. Boaz Studio came in to advise on the complete refurbishment of the communal space here at Sunley Orford House, a purpose-built block of quality retirement housing in the centre of Truro. Having listened thoroughly to the design brief he provided well thought out advice on materials, colours and decoration with options that not only bring a more contemporary feel but will revitalise the space for the future. His thought and attention to detail was appreciated by all involved.
